We Can Improve the Climate Bill

Our Climate Campaign reached a milestone on 13 March 2007, when the government published its draft Climate Change Bill. Thanks to all who helped towards this.

The Bill will put the UK at the forefront of global efforts to cut carbon dioxide emissions. It will set a long term target for CO2 cuts, and require annual reports to Parliament.

Last Chance to Influence the Minister

Come and show your support for a stronger climate bill at the Public Meeting on Tuesday 22 April, 7:30pm, at Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ. With environment minister Hilary Benn, both shadow environment ministers and FOE director Tony Juniper.

Ask your MP to support a strong Climate Bill

The majority of MPs last year said they wanted a strong Climate Bill. MPs will get a chance to make the Bill tougher in spring 2008.

Friends of the Earth believes three important things have been left out of the draft Bill:

  • Bigger cuts
The Government proposes a 60 per cent cut of carbon dioxide by 2050. We need reductions of at least 80 per cent.
  • Annual targets
The Government wants five year budgets for CO2. We want shorter targets - to hold the current Parliament to account.
  • Aviation and shipping
International flights and shipping emissions are excluded. We want these included.
